Detecting the presence of re-refined engine oil bottoms (REOB) in asphalt, or bitumen, is of great interest to departments of transportation and others involved with paving roadways. REOB has been shown to cause premature failure of roadway surfaces, and in many areas is banned from use with asphalt. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is an easy and accurate method to detect and quantify the elements that signify the presence of REOB, mainly additives found in lubricating oils and wear metals from engines. Sample preparation, analysis methodology and standards for this application will be discussed.
