An introduction to Gel Permeation Chromatography in 30 minutes
GPC explained in 30 minutes
Macromolecules, including both natural and synthetic polymers and proteins, have become ingrained in our everyday life.
Everything from the plastic in toys, the pipes in your house, to the components in your food and medicine are comprised of macromolecules. As such, complete and accurate characterization of these materials is critical in order to maintain the integrity and performance of their end products, and also to help develop more novel and functional polymeric components. Gel permeation chromatography, or GPC, is the analytical technique commonly used to provide this essential molecular information.
To provide a short introduction to GPC and its benefits I have recorded the above 30 minute video, which highlights the key components of a GPC system and looks in depth at what is actually occurring when the sample is inside the GPC column set. Multi-detection GPC is more than just a separation process, with multiple detectors including refractive index, UV-Vis photodiode array, light scattering, and a viscometer providing unique but complimentary information about the eluted fractions – all of which is discussed in the video.
Also discussed are the different data processing options: conventional calibration, universal calibration, and advanced detection. These options allow users to obtain a wealth of molecular characterization data from a single injection of their sample.
Data such as molecular weight moments, intrinsic viscosity, hydrodynamic radius, radius of gyration, concentration, dn/dc value, sample recovery, branching and structural information, and even compositional analysis are all available at the touch of a button!
This video aims to provide an overview of GPC as a complete analytical tool for macromolecules. For application notes, white papers, webinars, and other content that provides a more in depth look at a particular aspect of GPC, please visit Malvern’s Resource Center.
