Nanosight Pro on tour: Extracellular vesicles insights
For scientists like me, there’s nothing quite like getting out of the lab and meeting other scientists to hear about the exciting work that they are doing. This is especially true in emerging fields of scientific research like extracellular vesicles. So, imagine how excited I was when Malvern Panalytical offered me the opportunity to travel to the world’s premier scientific conference in the field of extracellular vesicles, the ISEV Annual Meeting.
This year’s ISEV’s conference was held in Melbourne, Australia. It’s a long journey from the UK to Australia, so in order to maximise my time I teamed up with our partners in Australia, Singapore and Thailand to meet even more EV researchers, hear about the challenges they are facing and showcase how our solutions can deliver the insights they need. It was a hectic, but exhilarating couple of weeks, across five cities, in three countries.
Frist stop: Australia
My first stop was in Australia, where hosted several NanoSight workshops with our local partner, ATA Scientific, at Deaken and RMIT university.
Dr Muhammed Awab (Research Fellow, University of Adelaide Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery) joined us at RMIT to share some interesting insights from his research: Gallium protoporphyrin lipid liquid crystalline nanoparticles. Dr. Awab was a finalist for the Malvern Panalytical 2023 Young Scientist Award.
The next stop on my tour was the ISEV Annual Meeting, where we had the opportunity to meet EV researchers from all over the world. Once again, we teamed up with the team from ATA Scientific to showcase our the NanoSight Pro along with our Zetasizer Ultra. Both systems are widely used in EV research, so this was a great opportunity to talk to EV researchers about the latest features and how they can access additional insights into their samples.
To coincide with the ISEV meeting, my colleagues, Drs. Rosie Fatscher, Agnieszka Siupa, Nelli Laleni published a whitepaper detailing a method for fluorescence labeling and detection of extracellular vesicles (EVs) using the NanoSight Pro, alongside representative data to guide the implementation of these methods. You can download it here.
Next up was a quick stop in Brisbane where we attended a symposium on Extracellular Vesicles in Neurodegenerative Diseases (EviND). This was a unique experience to hear the latest cutting-edge research that is happening in Australia and the outlook for EVs, with talks presented by leading experts in the local research community. After Brisbane was a quick visit in Sydney for the last NanoSight workshop in Australia.
Next stop: Singapore
We held two one-day workshops at the National University of Singapore (NUS) with our local partner, DKSH. Day one focused on how to get the best out of your NanoSight instrument. Day two had a different vibe with speakers from both industry and academia covering different EV therapeutic topics. Both the NanoSight Pro and Zetasizer Advance Ultra was on show where we did live demos.
Next stop: Thailand
From Singapore we headed to Thailand where we held several NanoSight Pro events with DKSH. On the first day we host a launch event for the new NanoSight Pro, followed by a demo in the applications laboratory. On day two we held an Extracellular Vesicles applications and characterisation workshop with guest speakers showing casing EV research in Thailand. A very interesting research area was around the application of EV in the beauty and health industry.
Towards the end of the week we attended the Extracellular Vesicles in Physiology, Pathology and Cosmeceuticals conference held at Mahidol University, Bangkok. We took the NanoSight Pro and the Zetasizer Ultra running samples throughout the event.
I am glad to be back in the UK at my desk for a breather and to be able to enjoy the summer holidays. However, I am looking forward to attending the Baltic Society of Extracellular Vesicles (BSEV) conference in Latvia in early September with our local partner – Derox.
