Post event report – Cardiff Materials Research Network Conference

Recently, the Cardiff Materials Research Network Conference took place in Chepstow, Wales.

The Cardiff Research Materials Network is a new interdisciplinary network bringing together researchers from across Cardiff University with a mutual interest in the synthesis, characterization, application, understanding and development of materials. This includes the cutting edge of new materials, the study of archaeological materials, how we interact with materials, including the built environment, and how materials research can address challenges in energy, information, healthcare and the environment for future society benefit. The event took place at the beautiful Marriott St. Pierre Country Club in Chepstow.

As part of the network’s program in its inaugural year, the entire network was brought together for a two-day meeting. Discussed were research interests, capabilities and opportunities for collaboration, opportunities for developing the networks equipment base within the university and future development strategy. Approximately 70 members participated at this event, and Malvern Panalytical were a Silver sponsor at this event.

Many interesting presentations on various topics were given, including:

  • Characterization of soft materials and in particular micelles, emulsions, foams, polymeric drug delivery systems, colloids, polymers and composite materials
  • Self healing concrete and Autogenic materials such as Shape Memory Polymers were also presented which have the ability to return from a deformed state to their original shape induced by an external stimulus such as temperature change
  • Bio compatible materials for infection and repair
  • Implant coatings for orthopedic and dentistry applications

Also, the Cheese and Wine session was well received and the Conference dinner was excellent. We look forward to attending again next year.
