Enabling More in-depth research
In archaeological research, mineralogical analysis can deliver important insights into an artifact’s use, manufacture, and originality. However, researchers must ensure that the analysis method is not destructive to the artifact.
X-ray diffraction is a useful way to carry out mineralogical analysis without damaging artifacts. In this webinar, we will present not one, but two examples for cultural heritage objects studied by X-ray microdiffraction analysis:
- mineralogical analysis of an artifact from the Chinese Bronze Age Erlitou culture.
- analysis of pigments on a colorful decorated medieval parchment.
We will outline both the process and results of non-destructive testing.
The analysis of small spots (for example, 0.3 mm spot width) gives insights into the used materials, alteration processes or fine details of manufacturing. For the analyses, we used the Empyrean multipurpose diffractometer with microdiffraction equipment (X-ray lens or monocapillary).
