How to improve paints and coating formulations: Keep learning!

This is the last in our 2022 series of blogs about paints and coatings. (Dare we call it the topcoat?) It has been quite a journey this year to capture all of the instances where our analytical solutions are used. We hope you’ve enjoyed our posts. It’s not really surprising that a wide portfolio of analytical methods is employed, because, as we keep saying, formulation is complex. Did you know… formulation covers many research disciplines and is one of those topics that sometimes invokes calls for it to be an academic subject in its own right.

There’s a lot happening in paints and coatings; supply chain challenges, research to switch to more sustainable source materials, and everyone is looking to reduce the energy used in their production processes. Any small change can upset a formulation, so there is no shortage of interesting work in formulation development and always a hunger for information. We know you want to get the best from your analysis. We don’t have all the answers, but we’d like to help in your journey.

So far, with our new brochure, blogs, and whitepaper, we have provided an overview of our analytical world for the formulation of paints and coatings. Some of you may be hungry for more technical depth and so you may be interested in a more technical webinar that was first presented in 2020 by Alan Rawle. The webinar introduces different material types used in paints and coatings and Alan describes the importance of different physical properties of the materials used and gives more detail about how these are measured and the impact they have on formulation properties. If this captures your interest, you can get some more meaty morsels of science by watching this webinar on-demand here.

Everyone’s work is unique, if your application is common, your samples are definitely different. How do you get support to go even deeper into your particular application? We have a library of application notes on our academia website, where for paints and coatings, you may find something similar to what you need in the ‘Chemistry and Applied chemistry’ section. For more technical information on specific analytical methods, try our resources section and search on your keywords.

We also initiated our Ask an expert! series of webinars in 2021 and now have over 20 product-specific webinars for you to watch on-demand. They are full of practical hints and tips.

If you’re really stuck, how about treating yourself or your employees to a training refresher? contact your local center for assistance we’d be happy to discuss how to work with you so that you can get more value from your analysis.
