Electrifying new horizons with Alsym Energy
Everything’s going electric these days – Thomas Edison would be proud! From transport to manufacturing, the biggest sectors in the world are going through the energy transition as society works toward greater sustainability. But for some, this is easier said than done.
You wouldn’t power a tractor with the same battery as a cellphone – and that difference is where our partners at Alsym Energy come in. Their mission is to provide the technology needed to bridge the gap between low-performance and high-performance batteries without the steep price increase that’s usually correlated. They work to provide higher-performance, non-flammable alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for applications where safety, cost, and performance are currently a barrier to electrification.
Analysis in action
And this is essential work! By coming up with the next generation of battery tech, Alysm Energy are helping many sectors to make a shift toward sustainability they simply wouldn’t be able to achieve otherwise. But along the way, the R&D professionals found they needed a little help with their materials analysis – and they called us.
To create truly safe, consistent batteries, it’s not enough to understand how your materials perform while they’re sitting on the table. You need to watch them in action throughout the charge-discharge cycle and make sure that nothing unexpected happens. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a great way to do this, as it’s non-destructive and can be used in operando. It’s like a window into your materials as they work, showing you changes in crystalline structures so you can understand exactly what’s happening and predict failures before they happen.
Alsym Energy needed this granular level of insight, so we provided them with our Empyrean XRD platform. The Empyrean can provide insights in operando and under non-ambient conditions – perfect for battery research, where nothing can be left to chance.
Building ‘a great relationship’
We were very happy to support Alsym Energy, and we’re even happier to hear that they enjoyed working with us! In their words, “It was a great relationship right off the bat.”
To help ensure that the Empyrean was the right solution for their needs, we sent our top team of experts to take a look at the specific applications that Alsym Energy work on. We showed them how the instrument works, and what to expect from their analysis. And we made sure they had our full support after they took the plunge and got their own Empyrean. We set them up with our in-depth advanced training to ensure they got the most out of their new instrument, and kept in touch too – as they said, “[Malvern Panalytical] are still providing training, support, and encouragement.” That’s always our goal – to support our partners in every way we can.
Enabling a better world
“Malvern Panalytical is playing a role in enabling us to electrify some segments that are currently experiencing problems with Li-ion batteries, whether it be cost or safety.” That’s what our friends at Alsym Energy said – and we’re so proud to be playing a part in their important work!
As the energy transition continues, alongside other efforts toward greater sustainability, it’s never been more important to form strong partnerships and work together to protect our world. Of course, we couldn’t be prouder that Alsym Energy found their experience with us “phenomenal”! But here’s the part that we find the most important:
“What really stood out with Malvern Panalytical is that they treated us more like a collaborator or a partner than a customer.”
Our individual efforts are important – but together, we can make far more impact for good. Partnership is truly the way forward, today and tomorrow.
