In the process of creating the desired hard martensite steel phase, the unstable austenite steel phase is the usually unwanted by-product. It affects the service lifetime and can be analyzed with techniques like microscopy, magnetic analysis, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Of these, the non-destructive XRD technique is the most-commonly known technique due to the precision and reduced complexity of sample preparation.
In this webinar, we will discuss the challenges for retained austenite analysis with XRD:
1. Introduction to the fundamental aspects of steel grades and steel hardening
2. X-ray diffraction as an analysis technique
3. The ASTM norm for retained austenite analysis with XRD
4. Common and less-common challenges seen in real life, such as:
a. Correct choice of radiation to solve the fluorescence or penetration depth issue
b. Dealing with the presence of texture in steel samples
c. The presence of tetragonal martensite and the presence of metal carbide phases
Our objective is to provide understanding of how RA analysis works for the regular, straight-forward cases of carbon steel, low-allow steel, advanced cases of high-carbon steel, stainless steel and tool steel. We will present reliable solutions for automatic Retained Austenite analysis by X-ray diffraction. Listen to the, on the spot, answers to our live Q and A session.
