Inhale in Edinburgh!

It must be nearly Christmas as we find ourselves back in the beautiful city of Edinburgh once again for this year’s Drug Delivery to the Lungs (DDL) Conference. I’m especially delighted to be here this year, as we have the new Morphologi 4-ID taking pride of place on Malvern Panalytical’s stand! I can’t quite believe it is almost a year since it launched back in February.

As I write, the Morphologi 4-ID is currently hard at work, analyzing a dry powder inhalation sample and enabling component-specific measurement of particle size for the individual active ingredients and excipients, delivering insight about the microstructural interactions between the particles in the blend. We can also show you how we efficiently identify and measure the active component within nasal spray formulations using Morphologically-Directed Raman Spectroscopy (MDRS^®) to exclude particles whose shape confirms they are excipient from the Raman part of the analysis.

The DDL 2018 program looks interesting and varied and I am looking forward to numerous talks over the next few days! High on my list are ‘Mechanistic understanding of microparticle formation in respiratory applications’ by Professor Reinhard Vehring, ‘Inhalers: Inspired or Expired’ by Jane Scullion, ‘Big Data for Respiratory Medicines’ by David Mannino, and ‘Cannabis, Cigarette Smoking and Lung Function – not all downhill?’ by Philip Ind.
